Runners- take your mark, get set, go.
You made it. Welcome to my substack. I’m excited you’re here.
My name is Maggie Bowman, and it was 6 years ago that I discovered I don’t have any hobbies outside of running. My now husband, Anders, and I, attended our first required pre-marital counseling class and our therapist asked us to share our hobbies. Anders listed off hunting, fishing, playing video games, watching youtube, etc., as hobbies of his. I said running. And that’s all I could think of.
Fast forward six years: I’ve run 2:47 in the marathon, raced from Santa Monica, CA to Las Vegas, NV and set a course record in The Speed Project, coached high school cross country and distance track teams to 7 state meet appearances, helped oodles of competitive and recreational adult runners smash awesome PRs, listened to hundreds of hours of running and coaching podcasts, and enjoyed countless miles, sunrises, workouts, and post-run donuts with my favorite people in the running community. Oh, and Anders and I are still married. Success.
In short, I still don’t have any hobbies outside of running. So about a year ago I started thinking about the possibility of making this hobby of mine my full-time gig. I currently work in education; I’m Dr. Maggie Bowman, dean of students at Blake High School. And I love my job, my students and my athletes. I call them “my kids”. But I’m also dreaming about chasing down my next mile marker: coaching, and all the challenges, rewards, mountain tops, and valleys that come with it. That’s what I plan to write about here.
So if you’re excited to run, coach, or talk or read about running and coaching, and the endless topics that follow, you’re in the right spot. Runners- take your mark, get set, go.
I ❤️ Coach Mags.
I’ll take all the Maggie content I can get! You’re awesome!
